THE POSITIONS
Gavilan College seeks qualified and enthusiastic applicants for 10-month, full-time, tenure-track Learning Disability Specialist positions in the Disability Resource Center ( DRC ). The work assignment for teaching faculty consists of class assignments that total a load factor of 1.00 each semester (usually five classes a semester). The work assignment also includes other responsibilities, such as curriculum development, participation in shared governance, student activities and regular service on college committees, which are necessary for the effective and efficient operation of the faculty member’s department and college.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Instructional duties and assignments may consist of one or more of the following:
- Conduct learning disabilities eligibility assessments for referred students in accordance with the California Community College Chancellor’s Office learning disability eligibility model.
- Develop student educational plans, including recommended courses, services, and accommodations for students with learning disabilities.
- Teach academic support classes in mathematics and written language.
- Provide individual and small group instruction to students enrolled in the learning skills laboratory.
- Assist other instructors with teaching techniques for students with learning disabilities.
- Work with high school personnel to provide smooth transition for students with learning disabilities entering Gavilan College .
- Participate as a faculty member including participation in shared governance activities, meetings, student activities, and office hours.
QUALIFICATIONS
Minimum Academic Qualifications:
Possession of a Master’s degree, or equivalent foreign degree, in the category of disability (learning disabilities), special education, education, psychology, educational psychology, or rehabilitation counseling; and Fifteen semester units of upper division or graduate study in the area of disability (learning disabilities); and Demonstrated ability to effectively teach, counsel or work with persons of diverse socioeconomic, cultural, disability, and ethnic backgrounds; and Possess a valid California Community College Instructor’s Credential in Special Education; OR The equivalent of the above. Individuals lacking the above degree-based academic qualifications, but who may have an equivalent background must submit an Equivalency Form as part of their application package. Desirable Attributes and Experience:
- Experience teaching adults with learning disabilities and other disabilities in an academic setting.
- Sufficient competency in basic academic skills to be able to teach academic classes in arithmetic, pre-algebra, basic algebra, reading, writing, and learning strategy skills.
- Sufficient competency in computer instruction to teach computer assisted instruction.
- Training and experience in the administration, scoring and interpretation of appropriate diagnostic assessments to include the Woodcock-Johnson Tests of Cognitive Abilities and Tests of Achievement (WJ- III ), the Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale (WAIS III ) and the Wechsler Individual Achievement Test (WIAT II ).
- Completion of (or eligibility for) the California Community College Chancellor’s Office training on determining eligibility for learning disability services and accommodations.
- Knowledge of the methods and principles of teaching students with learning disabilities and other disabilities.
- Experience developing and recommending educational strategies for students with learning disabilities or other cognitive or physical disabilities.
- Strong organizational skills, excellent interpersonal skills including the ability to convey information clearly, solve problems and respond appropriately to student and staff needs.
- Knowledge of State and Federal guidelines and academic accommodations as required by the Americans with Disabilities Act, and Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act (1973).
- High level communication skills, both written and oral.
- Ability to establish and maintain collaborative working relationship with other college faculty, staff and administrators.
- Ability to provide liaison with high school special education programs and community agencies.
- Ability to develop curriculum for adults with disabilities.
- Ability to train and direct instructional assistants.
- Sensitivity to students’ individual needs.
- Efficient organizational skills for needed accountability and reporting responsibilities.
SALARY AND BENEFITS
Initial salary placement in the current Faculty Salary Schedule depends on education and experience. Typical salary placement range is $52,317 - $70,131. Maximum earnable of $101,534 annually, is based on academic achievement, teaching and related experience.

A District committee will screen applications. Candidates will be evaluated on the basis of those documents received by the closing date. Initial interviews will be approximately one hour in length. The District does not provide for expenses for those invited to interviews. The President and/or designee will interview final candidates recommended by the selection committee. Final interviews will be approximately one hour in length.
Prior to employment, employee must: (a) provide proof of eligibility to work in the United States; (b) be fingerprinted and have background clearance, and have current proof of clearance from tuberculosis.
