Overview

Under the direction of the Director of Disabled Student Programs & Services, coordinate and supervise personnel who
provide approved accommodations such as sign and oral interpreting, assistive listening devices, Real Time Captioning, and
computerized note-taking for students who are deaf or hard of hearing.

Examples of Key Duties

• Coordinate, schedule, and supervise personnel who provide approved accommodations such as sign and oral interpreting,
assistive listening devices, Real Time Captioning and computerized note-taking, for students who are deaf or hard of
hearing
• Assess the communication need and styles of students and assign the appropriate interpreters to classes, students and
related events
• Oversee the preparation and maintenance of interpreter and captioner schedules
• Observe interpreters and captioners in the classroom and other settings; provide training and work direction; provide input
concerning interpreter performance as necessary
• Recruit, hire, and evaluate interpreters, captioners , and other classified and hourly personnel who provide services to
students who are deaf or hard of hearing
• Interpret the needs of students who use oral and/or sign language
• Provide expressive and receptive interpretation and transliteration in American Sign Language, PSE, CASE or oral
interpreting system for deaf and hard of hearing students in classes and program activities
• Respond to student inquiries and requests
• Manage contracts between the College and agencies that provide sign language interpreting and Real Time Captioning
services
• Develop training materials and opportunities to facilitate skill development for interpreters and captioners; conduct related
workshops and in-services; prepare and deliver oral presentations
• Serve as a resource to College staff and others regarding issues related to deafness and assigned activities
• Prepare and maintain various records, reports and files related to interpreting functions and assigned activities
• Perform related duties as assigned

Employment Standards

Knowledge of:
• American Sign Language, PSE, CASE and sign vocabulary used in an educational setting
• Code of Professional Conduct for Interpreters
• Appropriate use of spoken and written English including spelling, vocabulary and grammar
• Deafness and its effect on language development in deaf and hard of hearing individuals
• Correct English usage, grammar, spelling, punctuation and vocabulary
• Oral and written communication skills
• Principles of recruiting, hiring, training, supervising, and evaluating personnel
• Interpersonal skills using tact, patience and courtesy
• Record-keeping techniques
• Analytical and problem-solving skills
• Modern software applications such as Microsoft Office including Word, Excel, Access and PowerPoint
Ability to:
• Coordinate, schedule and supervise personnel who provide approved accommodations such as sign and oral interpreters,
assistive listening devices, Real Time Captioning, and computerized note-taking for deaf or hard of hearing students
• Provide interpreting, transliterating and other support services to deaf and hard of hearing individuals in a variety of
settings in order to facilitate communication among peers, instructors, staff, and others

Ability to:
• Prepare and maintain interpreter and captioner schedules
• Provide training and supervision to interpreters, captioners, and other classified and hourly employees
• Convey abstract concepts and technical terminology in American Sign Language
• Manage agency contracts
• Communicate effectively both orally and in writing
• Understand the special problems and needs of students who are deaf or hard of hearing
• Establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with others
• Understand and follow oral and written instructions
• Prepare and maintain various records and reports
• Operate related equipment such as Video Relay Phone, TTY, TDD
• Operate modern office technology such as a computer and fax machine
• Work independently with little direction
• Plan and organize work effectively
• Deliver workshops and in-services

Qualifications

Any combination equivalent to: Associate’s degree in American Sign Language, education, social science or related field and
1500 hours of college level classroom educational interpreting.
Valid certification issued by the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf required, CI/CT, NAD V or NIC master certification
preferred. Full certification to be completed 12 months after hire date.

Selection Procedure

A screening committee will evaluate applicants, taking into account the breadth and depth of relevant education, training,
experience, skills, knowledge, and abilities. Selected applicants will be invited for an interview (Costs reimbursed up to $500
per candidate for over 150 miles one-way). Each candidate interviewed will be asked to complete a writing assignment one
hour prior to the scheduled interview. The screening committee will recommend finalists to the President/CEO. Preferred
beginning date of employment will be on or after February 2008.

Salary Benefits

Salary Range: S-8, $77,796 - $86,952
The College currently contributes $8,282 toward annual premiums for medical, dental, vision and life insurance coverage.
Lifetime retirement benefits provided for eligible retirees.
