Department Description: The office of Disabled Student Services is a student support program
within the Division of Student Services. Our mission is to assist students with disabilities as they
secure their university degrees at California State University, Long Beach. We provide services
to over 1,300 students each semester. Over 5,000 students with disabilities have graduated from
California State University, Long Beach with support from our program.
Time Base/Hours/Units per Week: full-time.
Position Description: The Coordinator, High Tech Center, plans, manages, and directs
the day-to-day activities for the Disabled Student Services (DSS) High Tech Center (HTC).
Assesses individual and group access and accommodation problems, develops and recommends
courses of action, and implements solutions and action plans that assist students with disabilities.
Supervises a staff of two and a number of student assistants, and seeks external and internal funding
for equipment and programs. Duties include developing and coordinating complex computer related
services for students with various disabilities and providing university-wide technical support for labs
and lab coordinators in assistive technology for computers. Consults with university departments on
disability-related law, electronic access, and accommodations for students, staff, and faculty with
disabilities. Provides university wide training to lab coordinators on the use of assistive technology.
Provides students with disability related advising, especially in identifying the appropriate hardware
and software to meet the students' needs. Writes grant proposals and requisitions for equipment
and devices.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities: Knowledge of computer technology, the ability to install and
configure operating systems, and the knowledge to troubleshoot compatibility issues between
software and hardware. Knowledge of federal and state access laws that relate to technological
uses of computers, peripherals, web pages, adaptive technology, and access devices for people
with disabilities. Ability to negotiate reasonable accommodations for students, faculty, and staff
to provide equitable access to programs. Knowledge of the California State University's
Accessible Technology Initiative. Knowledge and understanding of literary and Nemeth Braille
translation conventions and the ability to format literary and Nemeth Braille. Knowledge of a
variety of contemporary adaptive technology and access devices and the ability to teach others
to use these devices. Ability to understand and resolve unusual situations that impact the types
of services that affect the short and long range operations of the HTC and the university community.
Ability to work with a diverse population in order to resolve issues with sensitivity to the technical
and personal needs of individuals and/or groups. Strong leadership skills to facilitate effective and
cooperative working relationships with students, faculty, staff, and administrators. Knowledge and
ability to perform evaluative research, employ advanced statistical methodology to data,
and summarize outcomes in a comprehensive report. Strong ability to write grant proposals for
the acquisition of adaptive technology and access devices needed by students with disabilities
to complete their academic requirements.
Ability to communicate with an ethnically and culturally diverse campus community. Ability to
follow all university policies, procedures, and guidelines including but not limited to safety, civility,
information security, and non-discrimination policies and procedures. Ability to contribute to a
positive university experience for each and every student, and assists in achieving the university's
commitment to a "vision of excellence."
Education and Experience: Equivalent to a bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information
Systems, Educational Technology, Communications, or related technical field and two years of
related experience required. Master's degree preferred.
