About the Position
The Academic Learning Skills Coordinator develops and implements individualized learning strategies and programs that provide educational approaches for academic intervention for students with learning disabilities and other cognitive disorders. Through one-on-one student counseling and advisement, the Coordinator will determine and prescribe specific academic accommodations. The Academic Learning Skills Coordinator is responsible for Learning Disability assessment and evaluation. The Academic Learning Skills Coordinator acts as a liaison for students with the faculty, department chairs, and deans. The Coordinator also will design and conduct workshops for the university community, both students and faculty, on student learning strategies and multi-sensory teaching strategies.
Additional administrative work will involve supervision of the Learning Disability Consultant, supervision of the administration of the Assessment Program, compilation of data and reports, and participation in the strategic planning process, committees and events of the Disability Resource Center .
Qualifications
A Masters degree in the area of learning disabilities, psychology, educational therapy, special education or other related area is required. Four years of professional student services experience which includes advising and problem resolution are required. A doctorate degree is preferred and may be substituted for two years of the required professional experience. Preference is for experience in a post-secondary educational environment providing academic intervention strategies to students with learning disabilities, AD/HD, ABI , and other cognitive disorders.
Knowledge, skills, and abilities needed for this position are
- Familiarity and knowledge of academic accommodations as they pertain to community colleges or post secondary institutions
- A working knowledge of learning disability assessments of adults
- Ability to interpret and integrate information from clinical interviews and psycho-educational and diagnostic assessments
- Experience in intervention strategies such as Orton-Gillingham, Slingerland, etc.
- Ability to distinguish symptomology related to learning disabilities, ADHD, acquired brain injury and psychiatric disabilities
- A working knowledge of the Americans with Disabilities ACT and Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act
- Excellent oral and written communication skills
- Ability to work with others in a team oriented environment
