FULL TIME TENURE TRACK POSITION
POSITION: INSTRUCTOR/LEARNING DISABILITY SPECIALIST

SALARY: $60,480 - $93,294/YR. (202 DAYS) (Initial placement will not be higher than the above listed salary, the top step for this position is Class VI, Step 19 which is $116,010 /YR.)
COMMENCING: Fall 2008
BASIC FUNCTION:
- Under the direction of the Director of Disabled Students Programs and Services, will teach a variety of courses designed for students with learning disabilities and those who would benefit from acquiring learning strategies to facilitate their classroom performance. Collaborate with College Success Center Faculty,
- Counselors and Instructional Assistants for the provision of small group learning assistance workshops. Determine eligibility for learning disability support services, including screening, assessment and interpretation, and the recommendation of appropriate accommodations and learning strategies.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Provide and teach a curriculum that meets the requirements of California Ed Code for DSPS specialized coursework including academic strategies courses to meet the needs of students with learning disabilities.
- Collaborate with College Success Center Staff, Faculty and Counselors to screen students for suspected learning disabilities and provide for learning strategy workshops.
- Assess and provide for student alternate media and assistive technology needs.
- Design and deliver staff, faculty and student training for the use of assistive and educational technology in support of learning styles and educational limitations of
- students with learning disabilities and developmental education needs.
- Provide training for faculty and staff on the nature of students with learning disabilities and those in need of developmental education.
- Update, design and deliver course outlines for specialized DSPS courses and General Studies curriculum in the areas of reading, writing and mathematics.
- Teach courses utilizing principles of universal design instruction which entails informing students of their academic progress, maintaining necessary attendances, progress records and assisting in the assessment of student learning outcomes.
- Provide assessment for determination of eligibility for learning disability services using criteria of California Community Colleges Learning Disability Eligibility Model;
- evaluate students’ academic strengths and deficits using appropriate measures, develop educational support services for students with disabilities.
- Referral to other departments/agencies, community resources and liaison to faculty and staff as well as the provision of training for faculty and staff with respect to
- students’ learning differences.
- Collaborate with college instructors, counselors, tutoring center and other DSPS personnel to assist students in the pursuit of their educational goals.
- Other responsibilities including maintaining standard of professional conduct and ethics appropriate to the professional position, including committee work and faculty
- liaison, curriculum and program development and student activities.
- Other duties as assigned.
REQUIRED DUTIES:
Demonstrate sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability and ethnic backgrounds of community college students.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
The successful candidate, by the final filing date, must possess the minimum qualifications for instructors in Learning Assistance or Learning Skills Coordinators or Instructors, and Tutoring Coordinators at California Community Colleges:
- Master’s degree in rehabilitation counseling or category of disability (learning disability), psychology, educational psychology; OR
- Master’s degree in special education, and twenty-four or more semester units in upper division or graduate level course work in counseling, guidance, student personnel, psychology, career development or social welfare and either 15 or more semester units of upper division or graduate level coursework in the area of learning disabilities
OR
- Two years of full time experience or the equivalent in one or more of the following: (a) counseling or guidance for students with disabilities or (b) counseling or guidance in industry, government, public agencies, military or private social welfare organizations in which the responsibilities of the position were predominantly or exclusively for persons with disabilities; and 15 units of upper division or graduate study in the area of learning disabilities.
- The applicant must possess a California Community College Learning Disability Eligibility Model Certificate; or California Community College Credential as a DSPS
Learning Disability Specialist.
- Minimum of two years or equivalent of recent and successful experience of instruction at the postsecondary level.
DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Knowledge and awareness of cultural issues in assessment.
- Knowledge of the implications of behaviors exhibited by students with a variety of disabilities.
- Knowledge and expertise working with adults who have disabilities such as acquired brain injury, developmental delay, hearing impairments, psychological disability, speech and language disabilities, and visual disabilities.
- Knowledge and experience assigning appropriate accommodations for students with disabilities and those who would benefit from strategies to facilitate their learning with respect to developmental education.
- Ability to advise faculty and staff on their obligations in providing equal access according to ADA standards and principles of universal instructional design.
- Knowledge of assistive and educational technology in accommodating disabling conditions and learning styles of students in developmental education.
- Knowledge and understanding of rehabilitation practices and functional limitations of disabilities.
- Knowledge and experience interpreting medical reports, vocational evaluations and rehabilitation plans.
EQUIVALENCY:
Applicants must meet YCCD minimum qualifications by the filing date or have been awarded equivalency by the District prior to the publication of the Recruitment Announcement.

If the applicant is selected for an interview, the Screening Committee will be looking for evidence of an eager, energetic individual with a sincere interest in and understanding of the needs of the community college student. The individual must possess the interpersonal skills necessary to develop rapport with students and staff. The individual must possess the ability to communicate well both verbally and in writing with students and colleagues and demonstrate sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability and ethnic backgrounds of community college students.

A candidate selected for interview will be required to visit Yuba College at his/her own expense upon a date selected by the District. Meeting the minimum qualifications does not guarantee an interview.

TIMELINE:

Before a person can be hired with the District, the candidate’s name must go to our monthly scheduled Board meeting, the proposed date for this position is scheduled for May 2008. Marysville is located in the northern Sacramento Valley , approximately 40 miles north of Sacramento , less than a one hour drive, and approximately a two hour drive from San Francisco and Lake Tahoe . The area offers many forms of recreational activities ranging from museums to hunting and fishing to boating and skiing. The size of the community and its affordable housing make it an ideal area to live in and raise a family.
Also, California State Universities at Chico and Sacramento and the University of California at Davis are an hour from Marysville.
