CALIFORNIA ASSOCIATION FOR

POSTSECONDARY EDUCATION AND DISABILITY (CAPED)

 

STUDENT SCHOLARSHIPS,  2013

 

CAPED invites you to complete a  2013  Student Scholarship Application. Scholarship applications will be accepted between June 3rd and September 13th . This year, CAPED will award scholarships to 11 students.

 

• Susan Bunch Memorial Scholarship                                    $1,000

In memory of Susan Bunch, a Learning Disabilities Specialist from West Valley College.

Awarded to a student with a learning disability who is pursuing a college degree.

 • Cindy Kolb Memorial Scholarship                                      $1,000

In memory of Cindy Kolb, a Director of Disabled Student Services at San Francisco State University.  Awarded to a student with a disability attending a four-year college or university.

 • William May Memorial Scholarship                                                                                 $1,000

In memory of William May, a CAPED Founder and a former Coordinator of Disabled Student Programs and Services at Riverside City College. Awarded to a college student with a disability.

 • Lynn M. Smith Memorial Scholarship                                                                             $1,000

In memory of Lynn M. Smith, Career/Vocational counselor at De Anza Community College and Director of Disabled Student Services at San Francisco State University.

Awarded to a Community College student with a disability who is pursuing a vocational career goal.

• Walter Young Memorial Scholarship                                                                               $1,000

In memory of Walter Young, CAPED supporter and husband of Past President, Ellen Young. Awarded to a college student who is blind or visually impaired.

• Steve Fasteau Past Presidents’ Scholarship                                                                     $1,000

In honor of all the dedicated professionals who have served as President of CAPED.

Awarded to a college student with a disability who has high academic achievement and has shown leadership and dedication to the advancement of students with disabilities in postsecondary (college or university) education.

 • CAPED General Excellence Scholarship                                                                         $1,500

In celebration of student excellence.  Awarded to a college student with a disability who demonstrates high academic achievement and is involved in his/her community as well as campus life.

Patricia Sonntag Memorial Scholarship                                                                              $1,000

In memory of Patricia Sonntag, a Director of the Office of Services to Students with Disabilities from Sacramento State University.  Awarded to a student with a disability attending a four-year college or university, who is majoring in a field related to policy formulation or service delivery to students with disabilities or is actively engaged in advocacy or leadership in campus, community or governmental organization that benefits individuals with disabilities regardless of major.

Dick Griffiths Memorial Scholarship                                                                                  $1,000

In memory of Richard (Dick) Griffiths, a Learning Disabilities Specialist and founder of CAPED from Cabrillo College.   Awarded to a student with a learning disability who has been challenged in math.  (In addition to completing the Student Scholarship Application, the student should include a brief essay on strategies that s/he uses to overcome his/her math challenges, which will be published in the CAPED Communiqué to benefit other students with similar challenges).

 Betty Bacon Memorial Scholarship                                                                                     $1,000

To honor the memory of Betty Bacon, a Director of Disabled Student Services for over 25 years at San Diego State University and a consummate advocate for people with disabilities.  Awarded to a college or university student with a disability.

Alyssa McCroskey Memorial Scholarship                                                                           $1,000

Alyssa Rayne McCroskey "Aly McCroskey", granddaughter of Paula McCroskey, Coordinator of DSP&S in the Riverside community College District for almost 26 years.  Awarded to a student with a disability who is "making a positive difference" in the lives of other students who are struggling to maintain or regain their mental health. Aly died by suicide, in the summer of 2008, at the age of sixteen.

Access Technology Scholarship                                         $1,000

In memory of Penny Petersen, Assistive Technology Specialist from CSU Long Beach, who promoted and advocated for the technology needs of students with disabilities.
Assistive Technology software or hardware (up to $1000) will be awarded to a student who uses this technology to access their college courses.

STUDENT SCHOLARSHIP APPLICATION PROCEDURE, 2013

§  Submit the following six items listed below in one application packet to be considered for one of these eleven scholarships.

§  Separately mailed items or incomplete packets will not be considered.

§  Please do not fax or email your materials.

§  The application packet must be postmarked no later than September 13, 2013.

§  Do not staple on any materials. Thank you!

1.     APPLICATION
Personal DataCriteria: Complete all the indicated information. Financial Need Criteria: Complete all the areas indicated for your estimated expenses and income. Student Certification Criteria: Sign the printed document after completing all required information.

2.     LETTER OF APPLICATION
Criteria: Complete the letter of application sections as indicated (NO MORE THAN ONE PAGE in 12 point type), demonstrating (a) your writing skills, (b) progress towards meeting your educational and vocational goals, (c) management of your disability, and (d) your involvement in community activities.

3.     LETTER OF RECOMMENDATION
Criteria: A letter of recommendation from a college classroom instructor (not a
disability specialist or counselor) describing your academic achievements and
your ability to meet scholastic responsibilities.

4.     VERIFICATION OF DISABILITY
Criteria: A letter from the Director of the Disabled Services of your college stating your disability diagnosis that qualified you for services.

5.     TRANSCRIPTS
Criteria: Current transcripts (unofficial are acceptable) that verify a grade point
average of at least 2.5 if an undergraduate and at least 3.0 if a graduate and at least six undergraduate semester units or eight undergraduate/four graduate quarter units or 3.0 if you are a graduate with at least three graduate semester units or four graduate quarter unters from a public or private California university/college.

6.     PROOF OF CURRENT ENROLLMENT
Criteria: Proof of enrollment in Fall 2012 at a public or private California
university/college.
