ACQUIRED BRAIN INJURY/SPEECH LANGUAGE CIG

What is the Acquired Brain Injury/Speech Language CIG?

The Acquired Brain Injury (ABI) CAPED Interest Group formed during the 1989-1990 academic year. Their purpose at that time was described as follows:

The Acquired Brain Injury division is established for the purpose of providing a forum that promotes awareness, communication, education and professional growth among educators of individuals with acquired brain injuries that leads to increased access to educational and vocational opportunities. The division focuses on the four following goals:

  1. To improve programs and services for individuals with acquired brain injuries;
  2. To promote awareness and understanding in post-secondary educational settings as well as in the community at large;
  3.  To provide support, encouragement, educational opportunities and a forum for communication to professionals who work with individuals with acquired brain injuries; and
  4. To advocate for appropriate funding and legislative support.

In 1994, the Speech-Language Division (probably formed in 1976 with the other divisions) merged with the Acquired Brain Injury CIG to promote more focus on the cognitive-communicative issues of students.
